I know it's possible, but would also not recommend it. It's the countries you have to go through. CR is fine most of the time.
I have some years living in Costa Rica and I know isn't safe drive in car all that distance, not for Costa Rica here is a good place and good peace ,especially for the bad situation of others countries of central America ,i think u gonna enjoy more if you rent a car here in Costa Rica , and drive for all the country ,visiting awesome places ,and having adventure...

Costa Rica is not in South America. It is in Central America, which is part of the North American continent. Driving would be difficult and dangerous. Roads through Central American countries can be horrid and it is dangerous...esp. Guatemala. You cannot drive at night...due to road hazards like huge holes in the road and animals on the road. You CAN drive in Central America, but I don't think it is wise. See sites below for info.
I drove down to panama 6 years ago .i,would not do it today,.things have changed for the worst since I came down .good luck if you try

Hi guys, I have seen many posts about renting a car driving down to costa rica but I know thats not really possible, knowing how difficult rental companies can be.
So my question is how is the driving down without being scardy cat "ohh south america so scary" stuff .
I see cars coming to cancun from all over like panama, costa rica belize etc. so is there anyone who can shed light to this dilemma, just like the gas prices, service stations, night driving, must see places etc if you have any tips, any at all, could even be only one, write here.
