I read online that you don't even have to technically "check out", you could just leave, as long as you leave the key in the room. Is this true?
By the way, I live in the Chicago area.
well the type of hotel that does day rates is where people just go for sex and price is not relevant
for a hotel the hourly thing requires more maid service more cleaning more laundry which means more cost to them which means more cost to the "customer"
so if you have paid in advance for the "night" and only plan to use the room for a few hours there is no need to even inform the front desk ... just use the room and leave these days there is no key there is a swipe card and you can just leave it at the front desk with no need to say anything unless you have used the mini bar and need to pay for any extras like food drinks movies
If you only need the room for a few hours during the daytime then call the hotels and ask if they offer a "day rate". (they are unlikely to offer rooms by the hour)
Otherwise - Yes, you can pay for a night and then leave the same day (not stay overnight). Do stop at the front desk and tell them you are checking out.
Don't see your point except for trying to save a couple of dollars, would you accept a room that someone else had used during the day without it being cleaned, No well that's right, cleaners cost money, change the sheets even if you don't use then, the electric and water is chargeable, they are not a charity.
You can do that, but what a waste of money. Just sleep at the bus terminal., or in your car.
