Holiday? or Vacation?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
What do you call going away to another country or another part of your country to a hotel or something if you know what I mean.

in american english it's vacation, however that's not a real language so it's holiday

I'm from Ireland and we say Holidays. "I'm going on my holidays"

Vacation is an American word right?

"I need a vacation" - Arnold.

British people go on holidays, americans on vacations. Although technically a vacation could refer to going anywhere away from your home for any purpose, as it comes from "to vacate", so just to leave your home. Where as holiday refers specifically to going on a break to get away from the normal stressful life :) So sorry, but in this case, holiday is actually the correct grammar!

British people say 'holiday' while Americans say 'vacation'. There are many such words...

dummy... pacifier

nappy.... diaper

pavement... sidewalk

chips... fries

crisps... chips

... and many more!!

As I'm Welsh I call it 'gwyliau', but if I were speaking English I'd say 'holiday'. I'd never use the term 'vacation'.

I say Holiday.

Holiday is something English people say, and Vacation is the American deravative from it x
