Brazil is safe if you follow certain guidelines. Don't walk alone at night (as in the previous post), be always attentive of your surroundings, don't display or flash electronics (such as MP3 devices, tablets, laptops, cameras, etc.) or your wallet/purse in public, etc., avoid poor neighborhoods (if you can and particularly if you don't know them well), etc. Try to mix with the locals. Large cities tend to be inherently more dangerous in terms of crime, as in any other large city in the world.
Of course you need to be aware of your surroundings but generally speaking Brazil is safe and people are very friendly. Avoid being a target, don't hang your camera around your neck or leave valuable items on show. At night and in isolated places can be dangerous so try to be in group.
Besides the famous capitals and touristic places, I would recommend you visit small towns and villages that are very beautiful. Explore north and northeast of Brazil and its amazing beaches. Places to add to your list Jericoacoara, Len?óis Maranhenses, Porto de Galinhas, Arraial d'Ajuda
Happy travels!
Hey, I went to Sao Paulo and Rio, and let tell you that I had a good time. Obviously I follow the recommendations of the locals. In Rio, I recommend you not to walk alone in the night because I was robbed there.
If I had to chose where to live will be Sao Paulo, because i like large cities and there are plenty things to do!!
I know Brazil is a beautiful country. But is it safe? What about the people? Is it similar to mexico?
