Illness after traveling to Costa Rica?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I just got back a week ago and had diarrhea, a fever, a sore throat and the chills. I went to my Dr. and I'm on antibiotics now. I suggest you do the same thing because if you let it go it could get worse. I thought I had tonsilitus or strep but it was really a bacterial strain. Gargle with salt and water, get on the anti-biotics and make sure you take all of them or it will come back twice as hard.

If it has persisted so long, check with a doctor. You didn't say where you had gone,, there are only 1-2 places in Costa Rica where there are problems with water. If you were in the back country it could be girrardia For your travelling companions, sounds like food contamination somewhere. The water in Costa Rica is safe to drink I have spent years there and have always drank tap water.

Anti-diarrhea pills, just stop you up so you can go about your life while your body tries to take care of the pathogen. Obviously, your body can't get rid of it so you need some kind of medical treatment--but you have to ID the pathogen first.

Do you know if the problem persisted with travel mates? You may have something different. In fact you may have even caught it on the way back home.

You need to see a doctor.

It is not malaria season, and there is not a huge malaria risk in Costa Rica but it does exist, so it is possible... as well as a waterborne illness.

Depending on where you were, water is safe to drink in some areas, but not others. Since so many in your group are sick, I would say it could have been the water.

See a doctor.

It was probably the plane travel more than the Costa Rica food.

I'm Canadian...living in Costa Rica for more then 5 years...I drink water...eat to people house...don't put "mosquito" stuff...never get sick...

But I wash my hands carefully before eating...

;)

Never, never, never drink the water. You have a bacterial infection. Go to see doctor.

About a week ago I traveled to Costa Rica for 10 days. Throughout the trip, many of the people I traveled with came down with an illness that caused extreme stomach pains, a fever, vomitting, and diarrea. I did not experience this. Since coming home, I haven't had a single solid stool, and it has been this way for about 6 days. I don't really feel sick, just a burning stomach ache before I go to the bathroom and have diarrea. What would cause this and why hasn't it gone away?

I've been taking anti-diarrea pills.
