Why is there no road between Colombia and Panama?

Google maps shows there is no road connection between the two countries. Why?

It is called the Darien Gap. a section of jungle too dense to have a usable road...and occupied by rebel terrorists that kidnap and kill any travelers who try to go through the area. See article below.

Hi John,

The Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia is about 60 miles wide and the most dense jungle in the world, there are no roads whatsoever. The Darien Gap is very rich in biodiversity, and a road would destroy everything. I think the last time somebody crossed the Darien Gap by car (4x4) was in 1996 and took over one year. This was a major expedition. However, today you can't do this anymore. The Darien Gap in southern Panama is a restricted area and you are not allowed to enter.

I'm Colombian and it's called the Darien Gap. It's a very dense jungle, very bio-diverse and the terrain is unstable and marshy. So much that not even the "rebels" can get into it, besides the wildlife is dangerous over there.

No one wants to build anything there, because of the ecosystems that might be damage.

Because of the cost in money and environmental damage of building a road.
