Why do supermarkets offer price match guarantees to consumers?

What kind of behaviour is this? And what effect does it have on prices?

To get you into their store instead of the competitor's. I would rather get 10 cents less per item for a couple of items than to get none of your business. Stores us "loss leaders" to get people into the store all the time. They will advertise a product at or below cost (thus the loss) to lead people into the store. Most people buy more than one or two items at a time, and the overall sale will more than set off the small loss on one or two items.

It is all a part of conning the gulible into thinking the supermarket is the customers freind. The big three all claim to be the cheapest and strangly seem to be able to get a way with it.

It is also amasing that supermarkets can at the check-out know what items are cheaper in other supermarkets and offer vouchers for the difference but do not lower their prices to match. The probable reasson they would then be accused of price fixing between themselves.

gimmicks whos going to travel across town to get 20p off an item they found somewhere else the pound shop sell some of the same items half the price they do so do many of the bargain shops plus all the offers should be £6 sell for £4 the same item £3 in home bargains it's like gas tariffs single item 50 tariffs everything is done to confuse and abuse brainwashing tricking in fact downright cheating

car salesmen used to be the enemy they have nothing on the tin of beans son only one owner knock you some off should be 70p down to 60p bought it for 10p but you don't know ha ha sucker

Its flamin rediculous
