You should NOT be sleeping in a basement with windows that are 12" x 24". Permits or not.
You will not qualify for section 8 on ssi, you have to be on ssdi.
No one is going to care if you sleep in the basement.
Your parents own the home, they should acquire the necessary permits for remodeling.
No it is not illegal to convert your parents basement into a bedroom.
I live with my parents, and probably will my whole life due to me having disabilities. I really want my own place but $721 a month(ssi) doesn't even pay for rent. And the waiting list for Section 8 is closed and it would be a 5-10 year wait if i get on the list eventually.
I want a bigger room and to be completely seperate from my parents. So i want to redo our basement. But i heard that its illegal to live in your basement unless its up to code.
Our basement does not have a bathroom or kitchen (so sadly id still have to go upstairs for that). There's 3 windows but theyre very tiny maybe 2feet by a foot.
The basement goes into the garage though(not redoing the garage as thats storage space), so it has the garage doors i could go out through or there's a door that leads outside right next to them.
I know i could make the basement look really nice, but i don't want to put tons of money into it and then get in trouble for it.
We live on a private road with 15 other people,pretty far from each other, so i have no one that would be able to tell on us.
Should i do it or is it a waste? Would i get in trouble(somehow?)?
And tbh our siding that my dad redid on his own def isnt up to code and it leaks, yet we havent gotten in trouble for that. (then again we dont let people in our home..)
