It all comes down to that Russia is back on the map as superpower and it doesn't have to listen USA anymore.
See if someone has democracy different than USA they're automatic wrong. But what USA needs to accept is that different countries have different cultures and you need to accept that rather than pushing values on everyone else.

Guys, America is always in anything for PROFIT. Oil, remember? yea so sometimes i takes a bit of shooting to get it, but business is the main game.
Russia is helping ethnic Russian areas of Ukraine,which want to be independent of the more European side of the country.
USA does not like this,nor does Europe actually, because it does not suit their business interests.
Joe Biden's son Hunter recently got on the board of directors of Ukraine's largest gas company. Halliburton has contracts for fracking (they're already doing it nearby Poland,too), Shell has contracts for oil exploration in the area wheee the fighting is.
Russia is not helping only out of brotherly love. More than half of their natural gas exports go to Europe through pipelines running through Ukraine. They don't want westerners getting control and jacking up the transit prices. Nor the Ukrainian gas and oilfields opened up so they can undercut Russia's market.
America of course is looking at nice profits, They backed the rebellion which got rid of the resident who signed an agreement with Russia (Viktor Yanukovych), and helped in one who is signing now with the EU (Petro Poroshenko). Both are billionaires, partly from side deals about shipping the gas through their country. The country itself is poor and keeps getting billions behind with its bill for its own gas usage. .
America is very mad about the civil war because it is bad for business. A World War would be even worse. Officially they're giving the Ukraine government only "non armament" help (field rations, bullet proof vests etc) but other NATO countries are helping with heavier stuff so US looks like not involved. They need it, because the separatists look like winning at the moment.
They can't surrender because the president has "promised" to kill 100 of them for every one of "his" soldiers who die. Never mind the separatists are his citizens, too. It would suit everyone , if the government wins, to wipe out everyone in those areas, to be able to move in "loyal" people who won't mess up the good business. Stalin did this once already in the next province over, it's not a new idea there.

May be because Obama isn't madman to begin another World War, moreover if he know that he can't be winner.
Could be the Ukrainian people living on the ground DO NOT want another World War going past their homes.
