I would say that those negative things are quite true and I would not recommend living in Hungary. However, Budapest is quite a wonderful city to visit, so as long as you do not plan to permanently move there you should have a good time. :)
Apart from Budapest, though, I think you can find everything else (i.e. lakes, countryside, mountains) elsewhere and much better.
So there are different people in Hungary, like in any European country. dont forget it is only really free since the last Russian soldier left in 1991. So the political culture is much behind e.g. UKs poltical style and human respect.
It has a great history though and great people also today. You should visit and experience it yourself. Beauty of budapest is sure there and security usually no problem.
lily is talking about the politician. people are nice even if you meet some racist they are nice and kind. but theres only a little, just as much as in any country. :) although there are patriots but thats completely different. all the people i know love the country, its weird that all i know who have been in the us say that is a garbage :) great opportunities for entertainment, for getting refreshed and relaxing, nice countryside, nice cities, good food, good chicks, good hotels, almost anything you would need, except extremely high fat bigmacs, black people, beach, a lot of stupidfat people, lowriders, legal marijuana or gay marriage, etc.
I hate hungary! they are full of liars and thieves!
