To be frank, you and your parents really need to do some research.
Below is one of the many websites that will let you know what Costa Rica is really about.
Costa Rica is a modern country without a military, that has national healthcare for all its people, concerned about the environment ( about 25% of the country is national reserves or parks), the most beautiful landscape and the kindest people.
I don't know where in CR you're planning to go, but in the Central Valley and along the Pacific Coast, the water is safe (I haven't been to the Caribbean side, just keep running out of time) and probably purer than the water you drink at home.
The food is fresh and sanitary conditions are beyond reproach.
So, do some research and have your parents are your side.
PS. A lot of Americans have retired to CR and English is a requirement in school, so you will find many younger Costa Ricans who do speak English.
ok,too much bear grylls for you...he got sick from drinking water (anyone would get sick if you drink water from a swap).
malaria is extremely rare, typhoid too. Costa Rica is not a freaking jungle,is a modern country, with no army, and the safest in latin america, you wont get shot, that′s so stupid,is not a poor country,is in the third world but it doesnt mean we live in the streets. costa ricans drink tap water all day long and nothing happens, the water is very clean, the food is completely normal, and if you think you′ll get sick, there′s a lot of macdonalds and pizza hut so you can feel like home....
