The best way to make money with Amazon is to create your own websites that target specific products or a segment of products. If you want free options, you can use blog pages. Wordpress is really easy to setup and has hundreds of plugins and themes that make it easy.
You need to research your products, keywords and competition well though, if you want to rank in Google and get good traffic. Traffic =$$$.
I personally use and recommend a software called the Azon Affiliate Toolkit, that will does almost everything an Amazon Affiliate needs. You can use the software to help you with all the research and you can concentrate on scaling up.

You want a blog that seems legit, and one that offers its original content, something that makes the viewers(which will be your customer) think, "Hey, I want this product.".
If you do one step wrong you may earn nothing at all for months while people who are successful can earn over $1000 a month and much more. Literally, even $10000 a month is possible as well.
Your mind set has to be on "how to make the viewers(customers) happy"
