Peru is not a poor country if you look at it. The capital Lima is an amazing place but what makes Peru seem poor is the distribution of wealth. Peru for years suffered of terrorism and that hit the andean provinces where people are less educated because of the distribution of wealth and thus easier to manipulate. Peru has too many political parties and each one their own interests thus the country is too unstable to forever be open to trade. Peru of of late is had goverments that favor trade and has started to develop but the problems of wealth distribution make the country look poor when you visit some areas other than the capital. Also due to most of the country being not too developed as the capital, people from out of the capital arrive to Lima and over populate it making some parts of the capital look poor.

Well, the Shining Path movement didn't help.

Peru has a lot of high mountains in its middle and jungle in the east, making transportation difficult. There aren't that many great ports, and the coastline is really hot & dry. But most of South America is poor, too (with the exception of Argentina).

Peru is currently one of the country with the highest economic growth in the world, since more than a decade, with low inflation rate and low debt ratio as well. Read the following recent article from Bloomberg to solve your ignorant issues.

Corruption, terrain, and mentality all hold Peru back from becoming a rich nation. The barbaric Spaniards took most of the gold from Peru and changed the mentality from loyal, honest, hardworking men, to drunk, lying, lazy people. Crime is also a problem. Hopefully one day my beautiful country will overcome all of this.
