I have never been to Haiti or the Dominican Republic, but I know that these two countries are not exactly safe. On the other hand, Nicaragua is among the safest countries in Latin America except for the capital Managua. I spent 4 months in Nicaragua and loved it. The people are very friendly and there are a lot of things to see and to do. Also, the Spanish spoken in Nicaragua is pretty good, while the spoken Spanish in the Dominican Republic is horrible as far as I know.

Haiti and Nicaragua are the poorest countries in the hemisphere and so you are more likely to have a life changing experience in either one of those than in the Dominican Republic. In addition the Dominican Republic has a violent crime rate about double that of Nicaragua and more than 3 times more than Haiti. Haiti would be the safest followed by Nicaragua but I would not worry about being in either country.
I been to Nicaragua on a mission trip and I loved it! Nicaragua was safe and God will protect and keep you safe. Just don't be stupid and be with other team members. Don't go off with strangers.
To the person who said that Managua was not safe, that is where my group of 85 people where and we were all fine!
Hey you all...My church in college is offering a mission trip during spring break for each of these three locations. I am not sure which one to pick...I guess some of my concerns are: which one would most likely be the safest? Which one would probably be the better experience?...etc
I know a mission trip is not about myself but I would like to know that I would be somewhat safe. Please feel free to answer if you have visited any of these places or even have a good understanding about what they are like. Thanks!
