Camping is always great - it's affordable and a real adventure! I have grown up going on camping trips and loved it as a kid - still love it as a grown up.
Alternatively, if you don't like to sleep in a tent, you may consider a youth hostel (there are larger rooms, so it would be kind of like a hotel room - just the cheapest version) - that could result in a great city trip :)
