Use a mosquito repellent with DEET. Follow suggestions in article below. See 4th paragraph on 2nd site. Mosquito repellent and long sleeves and pants are really all you can do.
It is in some areas particularly in the rainy season (North American summer more or less). It does depen on where you are going as well. Lowlands are of course worse than highlands but I doubt it is a problem at Roatan.
Okay, everyone acts like every mosquito carries it. I was in El Salvador (pretty much the same mosquitos as Honduras) and they had an apparent dengue epidemic. At the village I stayed in, doctors drove in to check for dengue. I was there a month ago in March. I got over 40 mosquito bites. No dengue no nothing. You would bring deet and if your around a non-moving body of water you should wear it. But dont freak out and put it on eveywhere you go. I never wore deet or any bug spray. I got ravaged but no dengue!
Get vaccinated for malaria, sleep with mosquito netting, and use insect repellant/bug spray.
How should I protect myself from the mosquitoes?
