Between college and university is a bit of a push - I don't want to take a gap year so when could I go?

If you don't want to take a gap year that's a little difficult. If your mum and dad pony up the cash for all this travel I guess your away. If not, you kind of have to plan where the time and money come from.
Just do it during Summer vacation. That's what I do.
Your problem is not going to be time but money.
All you need is money.
