There is more petty crime in S America than Europe or N America. I carry a decoy wallet with an expired credit card and no more than 20 dollars in it which I use to make small purchases and I keep my main money and credit cards more hidden. That way if I get pickpocketed I don't lose too much.
Ecuador and Latin America are wonderful and fascinating countries.
Like any other country in the world, there is crime. The Ecuadorian people are great and the locals will warn you of any danger but you also have to be careful. Like I tell my kids, don't expose your valuables as there is always risk of theft, don't walk alone at night in isolated areas and most importantly, don't look like a vulnerable person. I was in Ecuador for a month and nothing happen, I was in Washington for an 1 hr and my wallet was stolen. Then again, Washington steals my money every day.
