I overstayed my visa in Ecuador... now what?

There are allot of people Living and working in Ecuador illegally. You are OK as long as you sort it out. They will arrest and and fine you. If you have a good enough reason you might away from paying, but a month is a long time. I would seek out a professional, hopefully someone you know.

The lawyer we use here in Ecuador told us there is no longer any fine for overstaying your visa. This law went into effect last year (2012) at some point. One of the articles referenced in another answer is from early 2011 when the fine was still in effect.

I don't think you will have any problem reentering Ecuador after your 9 months are up. You've done your time so you should have NO problem. If you are concerned could apply for a 6 month tourist visa (Visa 12-IX) before you come back. You can apply for it at the nearest Ecuadorian Consulate/Embassy for $200.

Had you stayed not much would happen. I know of several people who are illegal and no one says anything to them. Even at the police check points. Years ago I had an expired visa and at a check point I was told I needed to get it handled within the week. I was on my way out of the country so it was no big deal. I've reentered Ecuador many times since and never had a problem.

Hello,

I entered Ecuador on a 90 day tourist visa, completely fell in love with the country and stayed for another 7 months, I did try to renew the visa, but arrived 3 days after the tourist visa had expired and was unable to do so.

They said that you must go to the immigration office in Quito at least 5 days before it expires in order to renew it or apply for any different visa (for certain visas it is necessary and recommended to go at least a month before it expires) having said that I am sure if you turn up just 2 days before they will accommadate you.

Anyway, they also said that although they could not help me renew the visa, I could go to Columbia (impenales) and sort it out there (fee included) or just stay on in the country and when I leave there will be no fine, just that I could not return for 9 months.

This is true, I left Ecuador on the 24th of November 2013 and left without a problem, they just said that I could not return for 9 months and when I do return, there will be no problems, and I would not be treated any differently.

So anyone in Ecuador now worrying about a fine when you leave, have no fear, just be aware of the 9 month ban.

Hi Gaia,

you need to contact the immigration authorities immediately, pay your fine and that's it. The longer you wait the higher the fine is going to be.

I overstayed my Ecuadorian visa by about a month, and now I must wait 9 months before I can return.

My question is, now that I am on record for this, will it be more difficult to enter next time?

Will the customs people treat me poorly based on this?

And WHAT IF I didn't leave Ecuador... Would they eventually arrest/deport me?
