My husband and I save change all year long to put towards a vacation. You would be surprised how much you can save that way. I also put about $50 a month away as well. Spend less money on things that you don't really need and you will be able to save for that vacation.
I'm saving now for one! The first thing I did was set up a bank account that collects the maximum amount of interest possible. I save as much money as I can, and I don't really buy as much clothes and books as I used to, and when I do, they're second hand. The best way to save is to be DETERMINED!
When I was young and didn't have savings to draw on, I collected all the change I had every day in a basket and periodically wrapped it and put it in a savinga account toward future goals for travel. It was surprising how quickly that added up when I didn't spend change and always used bills instead for purchases. It helped that interest rates were higher then. As it turned out, I paid for 4 years of university for my daughter from saved change that I collected from shortly after she was born. You could always set aside a part of your earnings toward future plans as well.

utilize your w4 at work so that you get a big return when you file your taxes. the big tax return is a great way to seed vacation finances. also, if you reduce going out to eat just 1 meal a week and take the money you would have spent and put it in to saf keeping for food when on vacation... each year that pile is pretty big for us and we have a grand time.
I always have the pay clerk take extra tax out of my pay each week, then i'm always guaranteed a tax cheque each year. this is always used to go on holidays.
You will not get any interest but at least you can't be tempted to spend it during the year.
