Nobody actually lives there - its just scientists who come and go.
In the Summer its about 4000, In the Winter less than 1000 mostly Research scientists as you said. They don't stay longer than a year.
There were a few very small semi-permanent settlements up until the mid 60's. They were Brits and American whale hunters, but whale hunting is now banned in those countries.
