How do I move cross country?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
This upcoming September I'm moving from NY to GA. I don't have a car, so was going to take a plane down with my 2 suitcases of clothes and necessities. I'm very unsure how to get my full size mattress set with frame and my 42" TV down there. I've been looking into cross country movers but there are none in my area. I'm sure UPS would ship the tv, but I have no ideas on the bed set. Help please?!

Well it all depends on where you will live where you arrive. Because many people are moving for work and study these days finding inner city apartments with a bed are pretty easy.

What you are best off doing is putting your things into storage and then collecting them at a later date when you have found a place.

But in reality it would probably be much less hassle to buy a new bed and mattress on arrival than try and ship your mattress.

You actually have several options for an interstate relocation, which would include:

1. Using a full service moving company- Usually the most expensive option and probably not a very good one since you have so little to move (there is a standard minimum fee).

2. Renting a truck and doing the move yourself- A much less expensive option, however, you would need to do the packing, loading, driving and unloading yourself. Plus, the rental rates on one way rentals (where the truck is returned on a different state) are much more expensive than the local daily charges.

3. Portable storage- You load your items into a crate/container that is provided by the company. They deliver it to your new location. Again, you will need to pack, load and unload yourself, plus the minimum charges for the only 2 large items you mentioned might not be worth it for you.

4. Using a small freight shipping company- These are shipping companies that specialize in moving boxes and pallets that are too big for regular post and are too small for full service movers.

You will have to consider the options and probably call around to find out some rates. Honestly though, I think that if you only have 2 items to move that you cannot take with you (TV and mattress), all the above options might be more expensive than selling those items and getting new ones once you settle in in GA.

In any case though, I have attached below a link to a directory that lists providers for all the above options by categories, so you can call around for rates. There is also a blog that I believe you might find useful, it contains packing tips for what you are intending to take or move.

Good luck!

Do have a driver's license? Can you rent a U-haul truck?

Do you have a friend or relative with a pick-up that would like a paid vacation to GA?? {Just as cheap as flying, and shipping your stuff.}

You could rent a u-haul
