From Maryland, it would be best to get to Atlanta or Chicago and take a flight from there. There are direct flights available from those cities which are the cheapest. Flight prices vary according to fuel prices, however I've found that booking 80 days in advance for international flights is the best time frame. It won't be any cheaper to go to Honduras or Belize. It would be more expensive or out of the way.
Spring and fall are the cheapest. The best rates are usually flying from Miami or Houston into Guatemala City. It MIGHT be cheaper to fly into one of these cities and then get a flight on TACA or Mexicana airlines. Check out different combinations through Travelocity or one of the other travel sites. However - any airline that flies out of Baltimore that goes into Guatemala City may give you a better deal just booking the whole trip through them. I did a whole lot of checking with a whole lot of options last year flying from the northeast to Peru. The cheapest flight was with USAIR through Atlanta - and my flight was actually $200 cheaper than flying on the same plane only from Atlanta to Peru! Have fun - hopefully you will be going into the highlands and not staying in the City very long. The City is the pits, but the highlands are spectacular! Don't travel at night, and don't wander around at night. There is some crime, but it is worth it!
Hi Annina,
you don't say when you wanna fly, and that makes a difference. In March for example the best deal is with American Airlines from Baltimore via Miami into Tegucigalpa at $ 594.00 roundtrip.
Spirt Airlines, www.spirit.com also offers low fares (only San Pedra Sula in Honduras), however, Spirt Airlines has a LOT of add ons like for carry ons, every checked piece of luggage, and other fees. Even though the airfare itself is very low, however, with all the add ons you often end up paying more than with any other carriers. Also, Spirit Airlines is extremely picky with overweight, and has the worst customer service ever. So, be aware of that.
Have a great time in Honduras.
P.S. Airfares change daily or even hourly. So, check often. I recommend www.kayak.com
September appears to be when the fewest passengers fly to Guatemala from the US, so that may be the best time of the year for such a trip from a cost perspective as the flights should be less crowded.
Whats the cheapest time of the year to fly and which airline will give you the best prices. I can also fly into Honduras or Belize if that will be cheaper. Thanks so much!
