Latin America is a lot closer than the US is with Mexico for example, because they all speak the same language and have similar ideologies (most countries are very left leaning and anti-US imperialism). A lot of poor people in Latin America often immigrate illegally to Mexico in the hopes that they will one day make it to the US. Its a dangerous journey and a lot of them either get mugged or die along the way. Random trivia fact.
