Europeans, do you hate Americans?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I'm a 16 year old guy, might go to France for the summer. I speak basic french and understand some. I see alot of things online about Europeans hating us which is weird because people over here generally like Europeans. I know people from the UK don't like us but I heard french people also really hate us. Not gonna lie, it's kinda depressing. Lol

No the French don't hate Americans, they just won't listen to American political views and this annoys the Americans. The French don't give a tinkers curse for the American way of life, that's not the same as hating you, it's just a point of cultural difference.

As for people from the UK not liking you, don't worry, they don't like anybody other than them selves generally, they have a feeling of superiority. Their way is the best way, attitude.

I know that Holland invite Americans to it's gay parade ever-year, and many American go to see it. So you're OK there.

The Scandinavians don't seem tobe hateful, too many family members living in the states I guess.

I must admit that I haven't heard anyone talk badly of Americans. Now and then someone might make a crack about your nut-case politicians, your love of war and guns, your bad legal system and civil-right track-record, but we don't hate you because of it.

You can safely walk the streets of Europa without some cop hitting you over the head with a baton.

I think that you will find that Americans hate Americans more than Europeans hate Americans.

You can in all safety go to France, but it might give you a bit of cultural shock though.

Where do you get that stuff from?

Most people in the UK have nothing against Americans. (Except the small number of Americans who complain about everything that isn't just the same as it is at home. We do do some things differently here).

In parts of France where the dairy industry is important, you may encounter resentment against the USA's ban on the importation of some French cheeses. If you disagree with your government's policy on that, it would be a good idea to say so (and buy some cheese): that will make you more welcome. (If you do agree with the cheese ban it would be more tactful to keep quiet about it while in France).

The French, especially older people, are more sensitive about their language than most other Europeans and will sometimes resent an assumption that it is OK to try to address them in English.

"Hate" is a very strong word. While there are people in Europe who, for one reason or another, dislike Americans as a whole, there are more who do not make such blanket pronouncements. Also - and here's something you need to understand - Europe is a continent, and consists of many countries. There is no one "European" opinion on anything.

Some people in the UK dislike Americans, and there is certainly one user on YA who takes every opportunity to denigrate the USA and its population. Many people in the UK have met Americans and like the ones they've met. Many people in the UK spend vacations in the USA so it's quite incorrect to daub everyone with the same brush. Many people in the UK want to emigrate to the USA. Many don't. It isn't, by any means, so cut and dried as the entire population of the UK disliking Americans.

Nah. I've met a fair few Americans in real life and online - they always seem to be very positive and friendly. That kind of attitude can only be admired.

Europeans can be quite sceptical. We don't take everything at face value and it takes time to be accepted. It's not a personal thing, but that's just how it is.

"I know people from the UK don't like us"....hmmm.

No we don't hate you it is not your fault your education system Sucks

and the Europeans do like to be asked do you speak English

Many Americans revert to Volume when in Europe to try and be Understood it just adds to your Rudeness

i only speak a Little French German But can say Parley Vous English and get a wee i then usually order Caffe ole and something that looks good on the menu

Europeans laugh at our accents but do appreciate our attempt to speak their Language in their countries

a trip to Sweden Italian Restaurant he only spoke Swedish and Italian me only German English took a while I got lasagna and chips and coffee all part of fun of traveling

I always take My Smile and Always remember i am a Guest in their Country

Plenty of British and European people dislike the American political system, extremes of social inequality, gun-culture, and their ham-fisted foreign policy cock-ups which keep causing trouble worldwide.

But it's taking a massive and wrong-footed jump to then claim that we hate Americans. The vast majority of us, British and Europeans alike, bear no animosity at all and regard American people just as they do other British and Europeans. In many countries, older inhabitants positively love Americans, especially in those places liberated from Nazi control in WW2.

Stop swallowing everything you read online and start learning to check the sources of "facts" and teach yourself some critical thinking skills.

It's a mistake to base your opinions on what you read on-line. The internet is full of sad trolls who have nothing better to do than insult people they have never met. For every anti American post you read there is another from American trolls using hate speech against us.

There is a recent regular contributor to this section who spits invective about us for some unknown reason. We know he's not typical.

Most of us like Americans. You will feel very welcome.

Stop stereotyping, you are 16yrs old and THINK you know what EVERYONE in the whole of Europe think about EVERY America..grow up........ we don't spend our time thinking about Americans, they don't come into our daily thought patterns...or basically we don't care to waste thoughts on people who live the opposite side of the world either positive or negative thoughts

What a childish question. At 16 you think you know. Here in the UK we like Americans, they are nice about our country and spend lots of ,money in the tourist areas.

I have never met a British person who has point of view about you.

As usual Americans think they are so important everyone must have a view on them.

UK

You say "I know people from the UK don't like us" as a statement concerning an entire nations views on another nation and then wonder why "people" don't like Americans? Stop being so judgemental.
