Yes, Amsterdam is safe as long as you're sensible. As with any other tourist destination/large city, you need to be aware of your surroundings and belongings - there are pickpockets. You also don't want to go out partying on your own and wandering around in an impaired state late at night. That could make you a target, but certainly isn't unique to Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a lot of wonderful things to see and do. Go and have a great time.
I personally haven't been but I've heard that the red light district is all controlled and are proper jobs so there's no need of fear of being snatched up my pimps lol and as for getting her stuff stolen everyone's to stoned to bother haha also I've heard that crime rate is really low in Amsterdam.
Are u kidding? Its the safest place in the world , where one feels safe even at 3am in the red light district.
The only time i had an incident was acting like a tourist on the damrak filming with my camera phoned and i happened to catch some youth in my angle. I knew this because i got something thrown at me and this youth curses yelling at me for filming him. It was NOT a Dutch youth, it was an Arab immigrant. There u go...
Almost every place in Europe is safer than just about anyplace in the U.S. Your friend has been listening to too much of the hyped up media. American girls do NOT get swept up off the streets and dragged into the sex industry. If you stay in hostels, you do need to be careful with your possessions- everywhere. But there's almost no violent crime.
