I speak fluent Spanish, and would have a blast! I love to plan my own trips, rather than find someone to argue with about where to go, or find a tour that plans everything for you. I'd feel safe enough there.
Then again. I have a friend with family still there, so I might go with her, and I have another friend who is always traveling and taking language classes. I might go with her, too.
Not me, I've already been there about a dozen times since 1992. But have no problems with anyone else deciding to go there. It's a beautiful country, even with the overload of Americans who now live and visit there. Common sense should judge how you behave. In the last 10 years the country has experienced a huge influx of " haves ", which has attracted many " have-not's. " This only means that you must be aware of scams and outright assaults a bit more than if you were in Nicaragua or Panama.
The country still has a lot more positives than negatives,..go and enjoy, just talk to the other gringo's after arriving to become aware of the places and situations that you should avoid.
I already did! I'm from Canada and I visit Costa Rica for the first time in 2007...and in 2010, I decided to move in! I still enjoy it.
I can suggest a "all in one" website to find anything you'll need during your trip, like transportation for example:

!Bienvenidos a Costa Rica! Have a safe trip!
Would you not go to Costa Rica on your own? Pura Vida
A lot of people go to CR on their own. In fact most of the tourists go alone without any tour guides.
In CR you can find tourist info centers every where and most of the people speak at least 70 percent English.
You just have to not walk alone in places that look dangerous. Try to walk and stay in places where you see crowds of people.
Yes but use common sense......don't wear flashy jewelery, no iphones and white head phones, don't flash cash....being American with blonde hair I always stick out even though I am Costa Rican and speak excellent spanish.....people look at you if you look American.....if you on the resorts then nevermind but if your going by yourself be careful, have fun but still be careful.....avoid San Jose and stay on hotel or resorts at night....don't wander at night.....
If you have the opportunity don't even doubt about it
