I did it in the 80's and 90's. The internet and cell phones weren't anything then, and I didn't have anyone to go with.
So, I said to myself, "I'm not letting that hold me back!" And I went by myself and chose my travel companions along the way, from people I met on trains to people I met in the hostels. It was liberating and it was awesome. I'd imagine with online communications and cell phones now, it's easier than ever to stay in touch with people you meet along the way to enhance the experiences.
Traveling on your own gives you freedom from being trapped with bad travel companions and enables you freedom to be by yourself or to hang around with people that you meet and really like along the way.
I'm female (if that matters) and because I listened to my instincts and only traveled with people I had good feelings about, I had the best times of my life.
Hope you still decide to go even if you go without a companion to start out with. It's scary at first but so fantastic once you get going.

I am from California and travel a lot in South America by myself. I would have liked with somebody from here, but nobody wants to go. Anyway, I usually go backpacking and always find people I travel with when I get there. I stay at hostels and meet tons of people from all over the world, and some of them have a similar itineary as I do.

Some travelers are always on, racing around racking up attractions and experiences; others like to find places to sit and watch. When you are traveling with another person, your rhythms are not going to match up all the time.

How to deal with this will vary immensely based not only on the individuals involved, but also on the type of travel you are doing and on what needs to get done . If you are sensitive to your traveling companion at all and it is fair to assume you wouldn't be traveling with him if not you will be able to figure this out.
You could use some travel community site for that say in Matador Network, in Travel Buddy or in Wayn.
