I don't go far these days. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and here in Northern California we have a great diversity of geography. I ride my motorcycle up and down the coast, or I spend a day or two in the redwoods or the Sierras.
I think it depends on what you enjoy to do in your spare time. If you like to relax then sitting on a beach in the Maldives or Cuba is perfect. However if you like to explore then going somewhere with more activities and places to visit such as California or Madrid. You could also go to the countryside in Ireland or Scotland. Personally on my vacations i like to spend half my holiday relaxing and half exploring so i choose a location on a beach but with activities to take part in. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Caribbean, Spain (Marbella and Madrid) and California.

Turkey mostly. The 'Turquoise Coast'. sun islands and 60 feet of clear water with ancient ruins on the seabed. dolphins and things. Kind of like Atlantis.
