Scotland's national animal is, surprisingly, the Unicorn - so not even a real animal! The reason for this is that it was once a popular heraldic symbol and was well-known in Celtic mythology. When used by Willam I of Scotland for his coat of arms it became a Scottish royal symbol.
The national animal of the Republic of Ireland is the Red Deer Stag. Definitely NOT the leprechaun which is not an animal, and is also a creature of mythology, so it's not real.
