What is Scotland's national animal?

Its well known that here in America we have the bald eagle, Canada has the beaver, Ireland has the leprechaun, and Mexico has the golden eagle. But what is Scotland's national animal? My girlfriend is Scottish and she doesn't know.

Scotland's national animal is, surprisingly, the Unicorn - so not even a real animal! The reason for this is that it was once a popular heraldic symbol and was well-known in Celtic mythology. When used by Willam I of Scotland for his coat of arms it became a Scottish royal symbol.

The national animal of the Republic of Ireland is the Red Deer Stag. Definitely NOT the leprechaun which is not an animal, and is also a creature of mythology, so it's not real.

Unicorn
