Everything that you mentioned is pretty much all there is. They helped the Republic of Panama with their independence from Spain and they were attached as another "province" but they didn't pay much attention to the new province. The french tried to make the Panama Canal, failed and the U.S.A. helped Panamá to separate from Colombia so that they could build the canal.

First of all, there are not states in colombia like in USA .... they are called departaments and they don't have an own government like USA states have.
