Volunteering overseas as a teenager?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I would like to volunteer overseas next summer. I would be 15 at the time and this would be my first big trip alone. I am a hard worker, enjoy children and other people, and I am very social, plus I pick things up very quickly.

I am planning on applying for a scholarship with an organization that would cover almost the whole cost of the trip. I could choose to go to Kenya or India. If I didn't get the scholarship though I have the option of Nicaragua, Ecuador, Ghana, East Africa, China, or India. I am not sure which my preference would be as a I have not done a reasonable amount of research on any of the above places. I just had some general questions.

1: Do you have any experiences volunteering in some of the above places, or anywhere else as a teenager, or any other age? What was it like?

2: What are some pros and cons of volunteering?

3: Is 15 too young to volunteer overseas? (I have heard opinions saying yes and some saying no).

My parents have not made their decision as they need some more information. Any information, past experience or stories you have would be really helpful! Thank you so much! :)

15 is too young to go off and do something like this on your own. You're also unlikely to find an organization that is going to foot the bill for the trip. Generally with volunteering, you need to pay your own travel expenses and pay the organization to defray the costs of your room and board and insurance. Volunteering can be a great experience. My daughter volunteered one summer in the Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. However, she was 18 at the time and I paid for the trip. I would not have let her go at 15 if they had accepted 15 year olds.

Hi there,

I personally appreciate your decision of Volunteering overseas. You can do what you want to do but before to go you have to do some homework. I went to India for volunteering in 2011 and my experience was awesome but I was not as young as you are at that time. I went with an organization Volunteering Solutions .Here I am giving you a link. You can call them and get all the information which you want.

Personally I think that unless your with a group and it's like a school trip then 15 is a good age. However if it would be very intendant then I think that 15 is way too young!

Also I think most places wont take you on until you 18 anyway!

Good luck though! It sounds like a good opportunity!

Just stay safe and DONT GET RIPPED OFF!
