Moving to Costa Rica?

Ok here is one part about your dream that is very stable. Being a teacher is very stable. So if you go to college and become a teacher and then go to Costa Rica and it doesnt work out, it wont matter because you will still be a teacher and you will still be able to have a stable career as teacher in USA.

Here is the thing about teaching in Costa Rica. You would have to expect no money out of teaching in a under developed place because even local teachers from the public school system have troubles getting paid their salaries some times.

But you could easily get a job in a private school in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has international schools for rich Costa Ricans kids or American kids living in CR and those schools are aways hiring teachers from the US. You can get a job like that in other countries as well.

There is a school called Lincoln High School in CR. If people graduate from that high school, their diploma is also valid in US. You'd easily be able to live in CR and teach in that school or in another international school.

If you get a degree in Teaching English as a second language and had a little experience I think you could get a job in Costa Rica and Teaching English is a good career. However, it would be hard to teach in a public school (the most underdeveloped) without being a citizen or permanante resident of a country. There are many private schools that serve students who are not really previleged however.

first, you need to check on what the requirements are to teach in Costa Rica. some countries require you to be a graduate of THEIR teachers college. Just because you can teach in the U.S., does not mean they would accept you education and credentials to teach in their country. what they teach and how they teach is different. also, you cannot work in Costa Rica w or any other country without a work visa and those are extremely difficult to get you have to find an employer to hire you for a job NO citizen of that country is available for. you cannot be hired, if their is a Costa Rican citizen who is qualified and available for that job. If you were to live in Costa Rica, and find a private school that wanted to hire you, it may work, but your chances in a public school would be slim to none. People who live in Mexico and central American countries often find volunteer opportunities to do...but they are usually retired and do not need to work to support themselves...because working in a foreign country is extremely difficult. Do you realize how extremely needy some school districts in the u.S. are...some are well-known to be absolutely horrible and could certainly use better teachers. There are plenty of needy kids in the US. in rural parts of the south and in inner cities that need devoted teachers. If you really want to help people , look near home...if you really look, you will find very needy kids not far away...and you do not need to wait til you finish college to become involved in helping them.

Hi Emily,

I think that every young person should have some experience living and working in a different country for a while because it will definitely expand your horizon and you will see things in a different way, something which is very positive. Besides you will learn another language. Tell your mom that you would like to live there for a while, maybe for 2 years or so and then continue with your life in the U.S. if you choose to. Also tell your mom that some overseas experience will increase your chances in the U.S. later to land a better job.

Good luck.

Sure it is!

Especially if you have the formation and speak English.

The better way is to first come to Costa Rica and visit.

I live in Pérez Zeledon ( South Part).

You can also visit Dominical, Uvita, Ojochal....

dollars to in costa rica

Hello all. Ever since I was about 10, I've had this dream of going to college to get a degree in teaching and then moving to Costa Rica to teach in under developed schools. I've been there a few times and even visited one myself. I know that I would absolutely love it. When I talked to my mom about it though, she shot it right down. She said there is no way that would ever work and that I need to pick a path more stable. Is there anyone that could tell me more on if this is actually feasible or not? Also any other advice anyone could give me would be great! Thanks so much for your help!
