Again I'm sorry if this question makes me seem ignorant.
You are not ignorant..
Kabul Used to be the beautiful city of Afghanistan however since the soviet Union invaded in 1979-1989 they stripped it of its beauty robbed, pillaged, and destroyed everything..
From 1989-2001 they fought ammongst each other violently.
From 2001 - now the US military has taken control of it.. some regions close to the US military are safer but none of it is truely safe..
My friend fought their and he says people say the US is their for no reason but when you see kids afraid to go home, mothers sleeping by the US military fences and staying in the proximity of the US /allied regions oyu can see they are suffering..
My prayers are with them and i hope they can achieve peace soone
Parts of Afghanistan are beautiful, but much of it is brown desert wasteland.
The Band-e-Amir national park is a beautiful area and I have been there:

People in Afghanistan > can < be nice, but it depends on what their local clerics (mullahs and imams) are telling them. Realize 85% of the population is illiterate and it's easy for the bearded pedophiles who hang out at the mosque claiming to know the "will of allah" to inspire hate and violence.
Pakistan and Iran are also supporting terrorist violence in Afghanistan in order to keep the country destabilized.
of course for the locals there are many beautiful parts
spend some time doing google images and look for yourself
of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder
so what might be beauty for me might not be beauty for you... think about it
the country has undergone many wars conflicts and hard times but still people live and love
the life goes on however this is not a good time to go there as a tourist
and yes the people are VERY nice
I have had many afghani friends they are very hospitable love entertaining
