Machu Picchu town used to be called Aguas Caliente and is a short 10 minute bus ride from the famous ruins of the same name. Machu Picchu town is by no means dangerous with many tourists travelling through every day. There are plenty of great places to stay, Inkaterra Machu Picchu being my favourite. There are some good hiking options around the town as well as some hot springs. Use a good travel company who will look after you all the way. DO GO! Machu Picchu ruins are one of the 7 new wonders of the world!

the city of Machu Picchu is not really a city anymore but ruins. The city closest to Machu Picchu is Aguas Calientes. It is pretty safe there and you should have no problems at all.
