Peru, Chile , Argentina and Uruguay are the most prepared for tourism , Brazil has many attractions but is more expensive than the others and does not have much infrastructure , but lacks much. Colombia , Venezuela , Paraguay , Ecuador , Suriname , Guyana and Bolivia are not as popular as others, but they are very cool too. In South America we must be careful because the indices of violence are high , avoid dangerous areas in Colombia , Brazil , Bolivia etc. . , Few people speak English , it is always good to know a few phrases in Portuguese and Spanish . The cost in most countries is very low especially with the dollar which is more expensive than local currencies . Roads and transport are not very good , and there are few trains (but has some good in Peru ) , you can travel by air over long distances , and bus or rented car over short distances . The hostels are better in Peru , Argentina , Uruguay , Chile and Brazil , in others I prefer hotels . Despite certain difficulties are beautiful countries with welcoming people , especially in my country ( Brazil ) ' hehe ' , here one sees things that are not anywhere in the world. Make sure to visit the Iguazu Falls , Machu Picchu and the Salar Uyuni , the amazon , the Patagonia , the Andes and wetlands ; the beaches of Colombia and Brazil , and Rio de Janeiro and Cusco , and several other places . I think that a journey should last for 3 months or more , but it depends on your time and money . Now most importantly, forget everything I said and make the trip you dream , the way you want , it has to be the YOUR TRIP , this is the best advice for a traveler . The South America is lovely , just have an open look. Good Luck and have fun! Any question you need I'm here , up because I'm an south american. Hug !
With a passport and money, specially in Argentina, Chile and Brazil, these countries are really expensive, also if you want to go to Brazil, you would need to ask for a Visa because you're an American citizen.
