I recently spent some time in Medellin and found it pretty safe. Of course you have to apply common sense and avoid certain areas, especially at night, something you would also do here in the U.S. One of the best areas in Medellin is El Poblado. I also read that Medellin today is one of the safest major cities in South America, which is not really true. Today the homicide rate in Medellin is about 24 times higher than in New York. However, almost all homicides are drug related, and if you don't venture into this area you'll be pretty safe.
You probably will appreciate the fact that you'll find the most beautiful Colombian girls in Medellin, actually the most beautiful in the world.

P.S. Never ever spell Colombia with an "u" (the Colombians hate that). Lol.
si hablas espa?ol no hay pedo como dicen ustedes los Mexicanos, Im dual citizen and travel back and forward to Colombia 3-4 times at year for the last 13 years. Yes 80-90 was other history and was more related to the cartels , and other kidnapping issues with the guerrillas if you were a military target or some one with a lot money who be valuable for be kidnapped by them or with other political reason.
Medellin as any other city will offer you people kind, warm and ready to help you, but you need also watch for the club's areas a night time if you are planning going in a mamacita hunting that could result dangerous, they may drug you drinks and wipe your wallets, so don't fall in the temptation and don't leave you drinks alone, follow common sense don't flash big amounts of cash , don't say you are Mexican, or coming from USA, just be your self relax and enjoy you never regret..

Me & my buddies are really considering going to Columbia this summer, staying in the city of Medellin. From what I heard during the 80s & early 90s Columbia was considered one of the mist dangerous country in the world but now is one if the safest, but I wanna to ask someone who actually been there recently but I haven't met anyone who has. Language will not be an issue, were all Mexican who are fluent in spanish
