Hi Sam,
I assume you wanna go to Nicaragua for a longer period of time, otherwise it wouldn't make any sense to drive. The airfare from Canada to Managua will cost you between $ 721.00 (from Toronto) to about $ 897.00 (from Vancouver) for a roundtrip, which comes to under $ 5,000.00 for 5 people. Driving won't cost you much less. Calculate the amount of gas, extra insurances, overnight stays, and food among other things. Besides you will go through dangerous territories like Mexico and Guatemala. Chances are very high that you get robbed. They couldn't drive in the dark because it is way to dangerous. In case you car breaks down you might end up paying a fortune to get it fixed.
Nicaragua is a beautiful country, fly there and enjoy more time.
Have a great vacation.
NO. NOT a good idea for many reasons. One, it is WAAAAY too far to drive with young children. It would be VERY difficult for them. Next, once you get to the southern part of Mexico, roads get poorer and poorer. If you have never even driven in Mexico you have no idea how poor the roads can be. They are not huge 4 or 8 lane beautiful highways with rest stops and big service plazas every couple of miles. When you cross into Guatemala, the roads continue to get worse and the roadways can be very dangerous. If you have car trouble, you may have a very hard time getting parts or repairs. Also, on your way through Mexico, you would need to take the toll roads and that can add a lot to your expenses. It would take you at least 4 days to drive just through Mexico... and you would need to eat and stay in hotels at night...which would add greatly to your costs. In Central America, and in parts of Mexico there are highway robbers that have trucks and uniforms that look like the police...they will surround you and take everything, including your vehicle. I am not exaggerating. friends of mine ( Mexican/American husband, American wife) Who had lived here in mexico in my town til last may, drove here from Indiana in January. the husband is mexican and has driven this trip many times. At one point south of Monterrey on the coastal highway, they were surrounded by what looked like Federales who pointed machine guns at them and screamed for them to pull over. Thankfully , my friend recognized they were not real cops and floored it to the next military road block. The soldiers there told him this has been a big problem recently. Just a few days before, the military had a shootout with the robbers and killed 13 of them. The only thing to do is drive as fast as you can to the next military roadblock...thankfully they were not far from one. I have driven that road in the past with no problems, but will not use it now...I will go the long way on the toll road. I always tell people Mexico is safe to visit. It is , however, NOT safe for first time American drivers to drive all the way through Mexico and into Central America. It is NOT like driving across the U.S. You would have to get a car permit for each country you enter and car insurance also...adds to your costs. FLY....this should be a no brainer, simply FLY.
I drove Canada to Panama 5 years ago and 32 foot motorhome and a 30 ft trailer behind it I know I would not do it now back then was 1 thing but its way more dangerous now
The boarder towns of Mexico are the areas that have been getting a lot of attention. Other than that, just worrying about your car all the time would be distracting. What kind of car would you be taking?
We are wanting to drive from Canada to Nica, the issue we are running into is how safe is it to drive? We will be having to drive through some "Dangerous" places so we were wondering the safety aspect of it? We dont want to be driving with three children (9,6 and 2) through somewhere where we are going to get beat and the kids kidnapped or something...lol... though that can happen anywhere, we are just slightly worried. We are trying to save money as for all of us to fly to Nica it is going to be $8000-$10,000 and driving would not be any where near that amount. Any thoughts what so ever would be GREAT! Thank you in advance.
