Hi Alison,
I am from California (male) and go backpacking to South America usually for 4 to 6 months at the time and lovin' it. I have met a lot of young women from all over the world traveling alone. Of course you need to apply common sense when traveling alone like going out at dark only with other people (ideally), don't dress too flashy, don't wear any expensive looking jewelery, never ever say to anybody that you got lost, always be confident when asking people for directions, etc., never carry a lot of money with you. In case you get mugged (don't worry about it too much) do not resist and hand over your valuables without hesitation.
You will probably stay at hostels. Try to arrive at the hostels during daytime and not after dark. You will travel mostly by bus within South America. When arriving at a bus terminal in the very early morning hours then stay within the bus terminal until it gets a little busier outside and it should be daylight. Try to avoid to pay with large bills; always carry smaller bills with you. In order to get cash use your ATM card which will work at most ATM machines in South America. Do not go to an ATM machine after dark, and try to go to an ATM machine inside the bank if possible.
When staying at a hostel always make a reservation in advance in order to avoid wandering around and looking for a hostel. Good websites to book hostels are: www.hostelbookers.com or www.hostelworld.com.
When booking a flight from the U.S. you must book a roundtrip flight. I would start in Bogota/Colombia and then make your way down the coast to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, etc., depending on your finances. You will need approximately $ 1,200./month all inclusive plus the roundtrip airfare to your first destination.

As long as you are conscious of the risks and keep your wits with you at all time, you will be fine. You will learn Spanish along the way and if you can take some Spanish lessons before you leave that will really help.
Have fun and enjoy this beautiful continent!
Very risky. If you do it, stay in the major tourist areas.
I'm looking at leaving in July and travelling for as long as my money will last. I will be looking at the more popular tourist destinations as I don't know Spanish that well.
