Why do states have ads?

Tourism is big business for many states ... unfortunately, some areas have become almost wholly reliant on tourism dollars to support local economies. Look what has happened to Atlantic City NJ with the spread of legalized gaming up & down the East Coast.

Those ads you see are designed to not only encourage tourists to visit your state...but also to convince residents to spend their vacation dollars in state.

It's to attract tourists, which brings in considerable money for the state. Most states have specific departments whose job is to promote the state- both for tourists and for businesses to locate there.

They are competing for tourists and the money they supposedly spend. Of course, it's not clear why government needs to spend money for the benefit of selected private businesses. Resorts and hotels used to pool their money to buy advertising to lure tourists to their area(s), but I guess they decided to invest in lobbyists and get their state governments to do it instead.

They want tourists to come, and that is why they spend the money. Remind people that your state is a good place to visit, and maybe they will chose there rather than the usual places.

Tourism brings $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to your state in a number of ways, thru money spent, and taxes on that money. Everyone has to vie for those same tourist dollars.........so it pays to advertise.

Financial interests.

I've recently been seeing ads, urging me to come visit California or Montana, they're not trying to sell me an individual product and as a resident of Portland, this confuses me as to why they need to advertise their state parks or need to advertise that they are the only state that has beaches not consistently covered in fog on the west coast.
