Best way to get more legitimate useful followers is just to Twitter through out the day. If you are really serious in obtaining more followers, Twitter at least three times a day.
Do not just Tweet only about your business and products and promotions. Share other aspects of your own personal experiences as well. Mix up the topics of your Tweets by alternating your topics.
For example, Tweet #1 of the day...if something interesting happened to you or something that you've witness, Tweet it; it may have nothing to do with your business but might spark the attention of other tweeters. Tweet #2 ......If you stumble on to something that is relative to your business and know that it can be useful to your follower (or potential followers), share it by tweeting. Tweet #3 of the day can be about your business product or promotions. By Tweeting a variety of topics, you become more human and real as opposed to just plain marketing of your business. The more you Tweet, the more likely someone will find you and follow you.
Ensure that you list things of interest to you in your public profile. Other Tweeters might be able to find you based on your interest and likes.
Be yourself. Don't be afraid to show your personality on your Tweets. Tweet like how you talk and show your feelings and emotions to engage or promote engagement to your followers.
Follow and be followed.
Link you Twitter account to other social networks like Facebook, Linkedin and Yahoo. Every time you post in one of these accounts, it will automatically post in your Twitter account.

Lastly, do not buy followers. They do nothing for you and your business. They could very well do more harm than good for your business image should it ever leaked out that the 5000 followers of your were all purchased or gained through Blackhat techniques.
