You can earn money with advertising. You can sell things from your website. You can list other peoples items for other people (affiliate) and have them pay you a commision per sale or lead.

So for example if you click on a link on the sidebar in Google the page you are going to pays Google a fee for that click based on how popular that term is and how much they bid to have their ad placed.
