Earning money from blogging is tough. I know of a few blogs (that are tied in with podcasts) that use Amazon.com stores, donations and get sponsorships. Blogging's benefit is getting information out there and THEN making money if it is corporate blog if possible. The most likely outcome is that you could becomea reporter after some time. Overall all, I would say that it is not easy to make money from blogging.
You cannot earn too much with Blogs. The basic way to earn from a Blog is to add Adsense to it.
You can monetize a site by either selling advertising space directly. You can use google's adsense to earn money. You can sell your own products. That includes creating your own ebooks related to your blog content. Use blogging as a platform to establish yourself as an expert in your field and make money via speaking engagements.
You really need to set up a self-hosted blog preferably Wordpress (there's more free themes & plugins available than any other platform) as any of the free systems have too many T&Cs for an e-commerce site.
