Build a Facebook Page post content to you blog etc. Make sure you blog EVERY DAY. Yes every day.
Be likable and kind in any and all your postings and comments to others. This very important to building a following.
Marketing a website/blog is just like marketing any product. However there are certain things you can do ie:
1. Good seo - are you using a SEO plugin such as All In One SEO
2. Are you including the main keywords on your pages & posts.
3. What are you doing to get backlinks ie participating in suitable forums and commenting on relative blogs.
4.Written & submitted articles(not an ad) to article directories with a link back to your blog in the signature.
5. Using Social Media as you suggested - there are plugins for this.
6. Have signup form on blog for a newsletter - form should go via a double optin autoresponder
7. Add 2/3 posts a week to your blog
8. Add a sitemap plugin to your blog and register with Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools.

The above blog is mine....I made this blog in November of 2012 and it's already surpassed the 1200+ views...how did I do it ??......Posted backlinks of my blog url on all the sites like fishing forums and all the other places fishermen would go to catch trout....it's a nice laid out blog....but didn't take me to long to get back-links done....
I also did a Tweet on Twitter to my followers but no other social networks.....
Sorry, there is no answer to this. Too many factors. A following takes a lot of hard work. It is almost like getting famous..
Hi! Hoping someone could answer this question: If you have a blog, how long did it take to build a reasonable following? I'd love to have my manuscripts published by a traditional publisher. They have told me the content is great but I need to build an audience first. How did you manage to build a following? Did you combine social media with your blog posts or get a following based on the blog alone? Thanks!
