Stayed a few times in Barcelona. In my opinion the Gran Hotel La Florida, is by far the best hotel although it is based up in the hills looking over the city about a 10 minute drive to the centre. This is where many film stars stay and it has the most mind blowing views over the city, especially chilling out in the hotel bar or restaurant at night. If you don't mind paying for taxis each night/day (although they do have a free shuttle bus also) and are wanting to impress then go here!
Another very good option is the Hotel Arts which is right on the beach, great hotel in reach of everything and most rooms have a great view over the sea and Olympic marina, so if you go here make sure to ask for a sea view! The showers also are like having a fire mans hose on top of you if put to full power, thought they were great, if that doesn't wake you up in the morning nothing will!!
Sure there are other great hotels too but these two are my favourite and give a good options of being right in the centre or on the hill! Have a good look through trip advisor and on the websites but look for the mainstream view and don't ever take all the reviews to heart as many people talk rubbish!

If someone else is paying, Hotel Arts. I love that hotel but only stay there when the company is paying. I also like the Claris, which is about half the price of Hotel Arts - it's not a cheap hotel but it's a very cool place.
I believe there's a Ritz-Carlton, there. If so, that's probably the number one.
