Is a regular Sainsbury's supermarket cheaper than a sainsbury's local?

Yes. You're paying for convenience at a Local and the fact that it is open for longer hours. It's just the same with Tesco Express and Morrisons Local, both of which exist in my local high street. They stay open until 11 pm every night and that costs money.

Yes,

Where I live in Surrey, everything in the sainsburys local is a few pence dearer than the 2 sainsbury supermarkets that are nearby

So far as I am aware the prices are the same across all Sainsbury stores regardless of the size of the store

Some items are the same price, but the local is a few pence more on a lot of things.

All the local stores, Tescos etc charge a few pence extra for convenience !!

Yes, the locals of any chain, tesco, etc are always a little bit dearer.

Supermarkets can also marginally put up their prices in more affluent areas.

It's the same supermarket chain so I expect the prices will be the same.
