New Zealand is only an 11hr flight from LA. It is summer in Sec so you will be getting warmer weather than you would in the northern hemisphere.
There are lots of adventure things to do, lots of nature, a few great cities/towns, different culture. English speaking and amazing scenery. Drink some wine, surf, swim or cruise around.

California beaches are nice ( I stayed out there for 5 years) but East coast beaches can be a warm contrast. Check them out.
The Christmas markets of Europe are great and most of the usual tourist attractions will be available. I particularly like the ones in Prague, Copenhagen and Vienna, but there are many more throughout Europe.
