if it doesn't have to be the u.s., i'd suggest switzerland. there are the alps, a lot of mountains, but you're not far to the sea as well because the Country is quite small, so you're in France, italy, Germany, Austria,etc in some hours(4hrs to paris, 4hrs to milan,6 to Berlin,etc...) so you can enjoy the clima you want really quick!
San Diego - you're in easy range of the beaches, mountains and desert. Ot places like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast of Italy or Eze in France.
try the south island of new zealand mountains AND ocean and definately NOT tropical
