What is the food like in Nicaragua?

I am from Nicaragua and will say that every household is different. My mother cooked creol food since she was from a place called Bluefields on the Atlantic Coast. We lived in Managua. Most folks will cook basic things, chicken, beef, rice and beans, etc. If you want authentic Nicaraguan food like Nacatamal (stuffed tamales rapped in plaintain leaf), or carne asada (roasted meat), or churrascos, etc. etc. street vendors or restaurants sell these things. I find Nicaraguan food is pretty much involved and unless you have a special occassion or celebration, most people go out to eat to get these things or they have someone cook it for them otherwise is back to basics. Regarding what those people commented about Nicaraguans not eating meat ...well, that's a lie. Nicaraguans are meat eaters.

Hi there,

the main staple in Nicaragua is rice and beans, usually at every meal. The specialty is called ¨Gallo pinto¨, which is rice and beans mixed together. They eat very little meat because it is too expensive for most Nicaraguans, and not much vegetables either. So the food in Nicaragua is really nothing to write home about, pretty bland.

If you are going to be dining with middle or lower income families, a typical meal will be rice and boiled or refried beans, boiled or fried green bananas or other veggie, chicken, beef or pork, and tortillas. It isn't as bland as it sounds since there are so many variables and you will be introduced to many unique dishes. Some that will be delicious and some that have to grow on you. Just don't come down expecting "Mexican" cuisine.

You got that right Norbert, the food pretty much sucks

I'm living in Nicaragua for two years and I want to know what the food is like. I am an American so I'm not really accustomed to any sort of Hispanic culture. I'd like to hear from some one who has lived there or someone from there. I'm going to be eating at lots of peoples homes and not any fancy restaurants.
