Hi there,
the main staple in Nicaragua is rice and beans, usually at every meal. The specialty is called ¨Gallo pinto¨, which is rice and beans mixed together. They eat very little meat because it is too expensive for most Nicaraguans, and not much vegetables either. So the food in Nicaragua is really nothing to write home about, pretty bland.
If you are going to be dining with middle or lower income families, a typical meal will be rice and boiled or refried beans, boiled or fried green bananas or other veggie, chicken, beef or pork, and tortillas. It isn't as bland as it sounds since there are so many variables and you will be introduced to many unique dishes. Some that will be delicious and some that have to grow on you. Just don't come down expecting "Mexican" cuisine.

You got that right Norbert, the food pretty much sucks
I'm living in Nicaragua for two years and I want to know what the food is like. I am an American so I'm not really accustomed to any sort of Hispanic culture. I'd like to hear from some one who has lived there or someone from there. I'm going to be eating at lots of peoples homes and not any fancy restaurants.
