Traveling alone at 17?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I'm 17 years old and I'm planning to travel to Reykjavik Iceland next month. I've been living alone already in France for a couple months now (I'm from Canada) and I have a French schengen visa to stay here. My question is, with the schengen visa, am I allowed to travel alone or do I need a letter of authorization from my parents in Canada or something? In the travel world am I still considered a minor? Sorry I know I sound pretty stupid for a 17 year old who's been living alone in France but when I came here I did everything with a travel agent but I want to plan my Iceland trip by myself this time. If you can help, thank you!

It's odd that you have a Schengen Visa - Canadian citizens do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Zone!

Icelandic laws state that your parents are responsible for you until you reach the age of 18. I am not sure if you need a letter of authorization but i would not be surprised if you did.

If you can get the letter you should do it. Otherwise we might mistake you for a runaway and then our child protective services and foreign office would have to intervene.

I have been travelling alone since I was 15. Most of the idiots here say 18 is the min. They are talking crap

Yes,

just to be prepared, have a letter from your parent(s) with you authorizing you to travel alone. Invest about 2 minutes of your valuable time to write it.
